SpectraPly or DymaLux?

We get this question a lot. Which product do I need? SpectraPly or DymaLux?

First, let's go over the similarities.

Both SpectraPly and DymaLux are made with the same 1/16" white birch veneers, both colored using the same dyes, and both are made right here in North Anson, Maine.

But that's about where the similarities end.

The next steps (where the adhesives are added) are what makes them two totally different materials.

To put it simply, SpectraPly is dyed birch plywood and has nearly the same physical properties (density, hardness, etc.) as natural birch. The colored veneers will receive a coating of glue and head into the presses.  After about an hour, the panels are done.

With DymaLux, on the other hand, the veneers are actually infused with Phenolic resin to create a "plasticized" wood. From there, the veneers are dried to its required moisture content and placed into presses that compress the panels under extreme heat and pressure. The heat cures the resin, while the tremendous pressure creates a very high specific gravity. The end result is a very dense, very hard birch/plastic composite. DymaLux is approximately double the weight of SpectraPly, and it's harder than African Blackwood.

One of the best features of DymaLux is its water resistance. With each layer being infused with resin, it forms a barrier that keeps moisture out, making it a great choice for outdoor products like knife handles and duck calls. The resin also eliminates the need for a finishing coat. Some quick sanding and polishing is usually all that's needed to get achieve a great finish.

So which one do you need for your applications? Well, if your processing methods and end products require a more "natural" acting, lighter weight, less dense material - go with SpectraPly. If you want added durability and water resistance - go with DymaLux. Both laminates are available in an endless supply of color options, so you can't go wrong either way!
